Leopold Tyrmand był dziennikarzem oraz znawcą i popularyzatorem jazzu w Polsce. Znany był z bezkompromisowych poglądów i niekonwencjonalnego zachowania. Sam wykreował własna legendę outsidera.
Ta książka obrosła już legendą. Wreszcie po latach stykania się z różnymi opisami i recenzjami oraz literackimi dygresjami do tej powieści, udało mi się ją zdobyć. Muszę przyznać, że spodziewałem się czegoś zupełnie innego, jednak nie mogę powiedzieć, że jestem rozczarowany. Książka, mimo iż momentami naiwna (lub na naiwną stylizowana), jest arcydziełem. Ta naiwność tylko dodaje jej uroku. Właściwie autor cały czas lawiruje pomiędzy naiwnością a ironią i momentami trudno rozeznać jego intencje. Jest w niej przemoc, lecz trupy padają z rzadka, a gdy już dochodzi do zabójstwa czytelnik jest nim dotknięty tak, jakby to stało się w jego życiu, jakby właśnie został zamordowany ktoś mu bliski. Książka pełna jest barwnych opisów Warszawy lat pięćdziesiątych oraz ludzi w niej mieszkających. Korowód postaci jest długi, a pozornie odległe watki powoli się splatają, aż ukazuje się pełny obraz. Sporo trzeba czekać zanim czytelnik dowie się kim jest Zły. Do tego czasu obserwuje przygody Marty, doktora Halskiego, reporterów Kolanki i Wirusa oraz wielu innych ludzi.
Dodatkową zaletą tego wydania jest format audiobooka. Dzięki temu z książką mogą się zapoznać osoby niewidome. Będzie także stanowiła znakomity relaks dla kogoś, kto cały dzień pracuje przy komputerze lub siedzi nad papierami. Odpoczynek dla oczu można połączyć z ciekawą lekturą.
