Nawet gdyby Martin Malachi nie opublikował swojej najgłośniejszej powieści byłby niewątpliwie postacią kontrowersyjną. Wystąpił z zakonu jezuitów i został zwolniony przez papieża ze wszystkich ślubów oprócz ślubu czystości. Choć wcześniej był sekretarzem samego kardynała Bei, to w późniejszych latach często krytykował posunięcia Watykanu. Oskarżenia o niemoralne prowadzenie nie znalazły jak dotąd potwierdzenia.
Zakładnicy diabła to książka, którą trudno ocenić jednoznacznie. Opisuje pięć przypadków opętania przez diabła oraz podjęte egzorcyzmy w celu uwolnienia ofiar z pod władzy sił ciemności. Każdy przypadek jest inny, ma niepowtarzalną genezę i przebieg. W oprawie dość sensacyjnej autor opisuje zmagania kapłanów przeprowadzających obrzędy egzorcyzmu, którzy często sami stają się obiektem ataków szatana.
Polecam tę pozycję tym wszystkim, którzy lubią połączenie elementów sensacji i grozy. Natomiast nie potrafię jednoznacznie ocenić autentyczności opisanych w niej faktów. Myślę, że pozostaje to kwestią indywidualnego podejścia i wiary.
