Arturo Perez-Reverte jest współczesnym hiszpańskim dziennikarzem i pisarzem. Przez wiele lat specjalizował się w reportażu wojennym oraz pracował dla telewizji. Ostatecznie porzucił pracę dla telewizji na rzecz literatury i cotygodniowych felietonów satyrycznych.
Chyba nie powinienem sprawdzać oryginalnych tytułów książek, gdyż jak to często ma miejsce, także i w przypadku W cieniu inkwizycji – tłumacz popisał się inwencją własną, mimo, iż oryginalny tytuł jest jak najbardziej przetłumaczalny i lepiej oddaje treść powieści. Tylko się człowiek niepotrzebnie denerwuje. Widocznie chwytliwy tytuł marketingowy wygrał z wiernością intencjom autora. W cieniu inkwizycji to druga część przygód hiszpańskiego żołnierza i najemnika z przełomu XVI i XVII wieku – kapitana Alatriste. Narratorem jest jego kompan i wychowanek – młody Inigo Balboa. Nie zabrakło także niebezpiecznych walk na rapiery i sztylety, starej hiszpańskiej poezji a znajdzie się również inkwizycja, o której wyeksponowanie w polskim tytule tak bardzo zadbano. Pisarz starał się nadać swojej powieści nieco stylistycznej patyny, stąd można momentami odnieść wrażenie, iż czyta się coś, co zostało napisane kilka stuleci wcześniej. Widać tu wyraźnie fascynację Pereza Aleksanderem Dumas.
Jest to powieść historyczno-przygodowa. Dobrze napisana i z dość szybkim przebiegiem wydarzeń, więc „pochłania” się ją bardzo szybko. Miłośnikom tego typu literatury – bardzo polecam. Na pewno nie będą rozczarowani.
